Clark Carlisle's unlucky own goal gave Killie a morale-boosting win against Owen Coyle's Burnley.

The home side dominated the match and thoroghtly merited the victory in their final warm-up prior to the big kick-off.

It was Burnley who began the brighter, but Kilmarnock defended very competently, giving Cameron Bell a comfortable passage in the home goal.

Killie came more into the game as the first half wore on and had the first real attempt on goal in the 27th minute when the Clarets only half cleared a corner to Jamie Hamill and the midfielder fired a thunderous 30 yarder which was blocked behind.

The home side went closer 6 minutes later after an excellent dribble from Criag Bryson saw him dance past two before being brought down by ex-Dundee man Kevin McDonald at the edge of the area. Garry Hay beat the wall with his free-kick, but Brian Jensen made a good save low to his right to keep the interval score blank.

Kilmarnock's first defensive lapse occurred 5 minutes after the break when Jensen's long kick out beat Frazer Wright and Bell, but Steven Fletcher's lobbed header fell wide.

Gavin Skelton then turned well and hit a good shot just over before Killie took a well-earned lead in the 59th minute.Steven Old floated a diagonal ball into the penalty area and Carlisle and Jensen got their communications mixed up and the big central defender nodded the ball past him into the empty goal.It was a travesty on Carlisle who had been outstanding at the heart of the Burnley defence killing all the home team's advances.

Substitute Robbie Blake showed characteristic poise to swivel and bend a good shot, but Bell saved confidently.

Burnley's newest signing Fernando Guerrero was sent on in the closing stages, and his first act was a petulant kick at Killie's Graeme Owens after he had been dispossessed. After that, he sent in a few dangerous crosses which the Killie rearguard were at full stretch to deal with, but they managed to secure a valuable clean sheet for the victory.
