Jim Jefferies had the air of a happy golfer at the nineteenth hole recounting a memorable as he told the assembled press pack of his successful chase to sign Allan Johnston.

"I've tried to get him for a couple of years, so I'm absolutely delighted to have him here at last. He's a player I admire and enjoy watching."

He revealed that his excitement rose after watching Johnston in training. "The way he linked up with Eric Joly was a joy to watch. Once Eric's really fit, the Kilmarnock fans are in for a treat."

Johnston himself was impressed by his new team-mate. Jefferies said "Allan came off the training pitch and asked me who the player with the blonde hair was. I said it was Joly and Allan said "He's some player". It's great to hear that coming from someone like Allan who has played at the level he has."

It was another boost to the squad ahead of the match with Celtic at the weekend. "It's been a fantastic week. The players get a buzz with a new signing and we're really looking forward to the weekend."

Jefferies also took time out to deny that the club had received a bid from Boston United for striker Kris Boyd. "There was no offer. We had acheeky enquiry from Boston which the boy apologised for because he had been told he was out of the picture. He was talking about taking him on loan, no chance.

"Kris is still a young player, and he's got a few years at Kilmarnck yet and we won't be letting him go anywhere unless the club receive an offer they can't turn down."
