JEFF GREEDY FOR MORE CALL-UPS

Last updated : 05 December 2005 By Brian Murray
Having five players called up to the national squad would be more than enough for most managers, but following another fine road win, Jim Jefferies took time to state the case for his defence.

Gordon Greer, Garry Hay and Alan Combe have already secured spots in Walter Smith's Futures squad for Tuesday's Rugby Park meeting with Poland, but Jefferies hinted that Frazer Wright and James Fowler could also find their way in should there be any late call-offs.

The call for Wright's inclusion is further proof of the Killie management team's expertise. Signed in July from part-time football with Stranraer, Jefferies stated at the time that it would take a while before he was ready for the first team squad. Indeed, when he made his debut at Tynecastle late in October it was due to an injury crisis and was probably ahead of schedule. But he has fitted so well into the team and teamed up comfortanly with Simon Ford (another great Jeffereies/Brown spot) that the defence looks as sound now as it has for two seasons.

Even if there is no space in Smith's squad for Fowler and Wright, it is great man-management for the boss to sing theit praises in public as it will keep their morale high and any envy at bay if they find the training ground emptier for a day or two.
