Battling victory over unlucky Well

Killie produced another terrific result in a season of uncharacteristic consistency on Wednesday night at Rugby Park.

There won't be many home fans who would argue that the scoreline was a fair reflection of the game, but hey, how many times have we been on te wrong end of these games?

Motherwell hit the post with a freekick in the first half after Alan Combe had produced one of the saves of the season (again!), and struck the woodwork again in the second half before Graeme Smith produced a reflex block to keep the two goal lead.

If Gary Wales had been wearing black lat night the result would have been quite different, but the Killie striker looked sharp, and took his only chances of the game with confidence and style. His first goal was particularly satisfying. His prodigious leap allowed the ball to reach Colin Nish, and Wales then spun and raced into the space left by the beaten defender and Nish deserves credit for his perfect lay off. Wales still had plenty of work to do but took his shot early and drilled home from the edge of the box. It was a movement that is practised every day in training and it worked to perfection for a vital score.

His second goal was a great finish with an awkwardly bouncing ball, and the much maligned Nish should received another pat on the back because no-one else in the Kilmarnock squad would have been capable of challenging the keeper to Lindsay Wilson's looping cross without giving away a foul.

The three points gained from Wednesday's victory mean that a draw at Inverness would be quite acceptable, but another win would virtually secure a top six finish, which considering the resources of the teams below, is a great achievement. A wee run of victories in the upcoming games may even bring a UEFA Cup place into the equation, which would be a truly incredible feat in this season of the resurgence of Hearts and Hibs.
